DECAF - Sugarcane Decaffeination

Sugarcane decaffeination, also known as the sugar cane process, is a natural method of decaffeinating coffee that uses ethyl acetate (EA). This solvent is obtained by fermenting sugar cane and allows for the gentle removal of caffeine while largely preserving the aromas of the coffee.

The process involves several steps:

1. Steaming the coffee beans
2. caffeine extraction
3. cleaning and drying

This process is particularly environmentally friendly and harmless to health, as ethyl acetate is an ester that occurs naturally in many fruits. In addition, the use of sugar cane gives the decaffeinated coffee a pleasant, natural sweetness.

Due to the proximity of the decaffeination plants to the growing areas in Colombia, the process can be carried out efficiently and in a resource-saving manner directly on site.

DECAF quality is confirmed by increasing demand!

When we brought the first decaffeinated coffee from Colombia to Europe in 2018, the decaffeination plant in Manizales was only operating at 20% capacity. But with the growing popularity of this method in the specialty coffee scene, the situation has changed fundamentally. Today, short-term slots in the plant are hardly available anymore - processing is no longer possible without forward planning. In order to be considered in time, appointments now have to be reserved months in advance.
